From the ChatGPT Moment to Your Own Command Center

What I told the SVCACA board about where AI agents have been, where they are now, and the methodology I use to think and create with AI — not let it think for me.

What three years of AI agents actually looks like from the stage

I recently delivered a keynote to the board of the Silicon Valley Chinese American Chamber Association (SVCACA) — founders, executives, and board members, not engineers. The brief I gave myself: no slideware demos, nothing I haven't run in my own business. Twenty-plus years moving between engineering, strategy, and the boardroom taught me that credibility in that room comes from proof, not projection.

The proof I led with: a FinOps engagement at an iconic SaaS company that drove seven digits of savings across data and AI platforms. The lesson underneath it wasn't "use AI" — it was ask the right questions and solve the right problems. That discipline is what the rest of the talk was actually about.

Chat window → coding automation → harness

I walked the room through three phases. First, the ChatGPT moment: for the first time, AI could respond like a human, in plain conversation — and everyone got excited. But it also hallucinates, confidently and plausibly, and it doesn't know who you are: no memory of you, your business, or your goals between sessions.

Second, coding automation: tools like Anthropic Claude Code moved past inline autocomplete into running real commands on your behalf, like a programmer in your own terminal. Still genuinely difficult to install and configure — real setup friction, not a one-click experience — but it proved something bigger: natural-language instructions can drive real machine execution.

Third, and where we are now: the harness. Agents — the capability of executing code automatically on your computer — paired with standardized instruction files (CLAUDE.md, AGENTS.md, GEMINI.md) that chain together to accomplish complex tasks, and connectors to email, files, and applications that the model could never reach on its own.

“The chat window answers questions. The harness carries your question with it — into your inbox, your calendar, your codebase.”

The command center that replaces ten apps

This is the part boards need to hear plainly: Claude Code or Codex is becoming the single place you work — not another tab, the tab. Email, chat, and calendar connectors — powered by the same standing instructions — mean the harness reads and drafts on your behalf, in your voice. You stop copy-pasting context between a chatbot and your real tools. Excel, PowerPoint, and Word stay the output formats, but stop being where you spend your time clicking — the skill that matters shifts from knowing the software to asking the right question.

WRITITATION: think, create, and decide with AI — not by AI

The framework underneath all of it is one I've time-stamped with the USPTO: WRITITATION — my own methodology to think, create, and make decisions with AI, not by AI. It builds a knowledge and memory flywheel from your own context, generating blog posts, proposals, and relationship follow-ups from that same connected memory. Thinking and writing are integrated cognitive activities, augmented by AI — which increases the chance of serendipity to solve problems, not replaces the thinking itself.

I closed with a concrete offer for that room: an Executive Agentic AI Cohort for SVCACA members, built around exactly two disciplines their teams live in daily — customer relationship management and Second Brain / knowledge management — both taught through WRITITATION.

Common questions

What are the three phases of AI agent evolution described in the keynote?
First the chat window, where AI responds in plain conversation but hallucinates and has no memory of you. Second coding automation, where tools like Claude Code run real commands on your behalf. Third the harness, where agents combine standing instruction files with connectors to your email, files, and applications.
What is an agent harness?
It is agents that execute code on your computer, paired with standardized instruction files such as CLAUDE.md, AGENTS.md and GEMINI.md that chain together to accomplish complex tasks, plus connectors to tools the model could not reach on its own.
What is WRITITATION?
WRITITATION is Ping Wu's methodology, time-stamped with the USPTO, for thinking, creating, and making decisions with AI rather than by AI. It builds a knowledge and memory flywheel from your own context.
Why does the command-center idea matter for executives?
Claude Code or Codex becomes the single place you work, so you stop copy-pasting context between a chatbot and your real tools. The skill that matters shifts from knowing the software to asking the right question.
